OSOU is established by an Act of the Odisha Government, governed by OSOU Act, 2014 (Odisha Act 5 of 2015). It is recognised by UGC under Section 2(f) of UGC Act 1956. The mission of the University is to make Odisha the knowledge hub through education, training, research and capacity building, and promote skill development for the youth, particularly the under-privileged, so as to ensure access and equity in higher education and enhance employability. OSOU introduces Diploma in Tribal Studies for developing a well-trained set of tribal development professionals who can bring about positive changes and improve the quality of life of the Tribals.
The aim of this programme is to give basic knowledge of tribes and their situation in India. It will help learners to understand tribal way of life in India including their culture, tradition as well as changes occurs in their life. The programme hopes to provide employment of learners in the tribal development departments in NGOs or other institutions and help individuals working in the social and welfare service sector targeted for the Tribal to acquire professional education and will enable them to be trained, educated which in turn will help them better understand the issues and remove the bias if any formed during the course of their work. With the pressing need for trained professionals in tribal areas, the P.G. Diploma programme in Tribal Studies through distance learning will enable the in-service personnel in social and welfare sectors to enhance their competence.
The One Year Programme is of 32 Credits which will be offered in two Semesters. First Semester will have three Courses of sixteen Credits each and the Second Semester comprises three Courses and a Project of 16 Credits The learning material for each Course has been divided into Blocks and each Block will have a number of Units. For completion of the course, a student is required to spend 960 hours that includes Contact Classes, Assignments, Self-Study, Examination.
